by VictoriaW on June 30, 2008

As a female, there are specific ways and methods to save cash and cut corners. Unlike men, we have a multitude of expenses that accompany being a woman- manicures, highlights, special conditioners, eyebrow waxing- just to name a few. But through living frugally and knowing where to skimp, you can conserve money and come out ahead of the game- and with some extra funds in your pocket.

  • Haircuts

Having your hair cut by a pro can cost you dearly. However, hair school graduates and apprentices will usually cut your hair for free, or at a deeply discounted rate. They are qualified and trained properly, but are just seeking practical hands-on experience. You can find them by contacting local cosmetology schools or keeping an eye out for the ads in your local paper.

  • Manicures and pedicures

Forgo these expensive weekly luxuries. Sure, your manicure might only cost $15 a week, but you’re spending $60 monthly and $720 a year. And that’s not even counting tips or wraps, much less pedicures. Instead, opt to do your nails at home. The new nail kits and quick-drying polishes make it a snap.

  • Clothes

Shop online! With so many sites offering free shipping and no tax, it’s a bargain. There’s a remarkable selection and quality of clothes online, and with so much competition in the online marketplace, there’s something for everyone. To get further discounts on your wardrobe essentials, use online coupons when making your purchase.

  • Purses &Accessories

    - Hit the thrift store or the garage sales to find unique and quirky pieces. At these treasure troves, cute purses, shoes and costume jewelry can be found at dirt-cheap prices with a little digging. The added bonus: With such unique and special pieces, you won’t be toting the same gear as everyone else.

  • Personal Care products

    - Sick of paying $8 for shampoo? Head to the dollar store and grab some inexpensive staples such as shampoo, soap and shaving cream. These products are all relatively the same in content and quality, whether you buy it for $8 at a beauty shop or a buck at the dollar store. While it pays sometimes to get higher quality products such as conditioner or face cream, you can cut corners on basic beauty staples.

  • Makeup

    - Head to your local pharmacy or giant box retailer and scope out the discount racks. There is a diverse array of different makeup products for deeply discounted prices. There’s nothing wrong with these clearance products- usually the store has simply overstocked a certain color or brand, and needs to make way for new offerings. Dig through the selection with a critical eye to find great bargains on eye shadows, blush, foundation and more.

While you won’t become a millionaire overnight by making these small switches, you can certainly save some of your hard-earned cash and see your expenses decrease. And of course, it’s gratifying, empowering and satisfying to be able to look fabulous while sticking to a budget.
