Slurpies ended up costing some 7-Eleven fans more than a buck after a recent security breach at Citibank ATM’s located in 7-Eleven stores. According to an article from CNNMoney on ATM security, you are much safer using a cash machine at your bank rather than at a convenience store. Here are some other tips that will help you stay safe at the ATM.

- ATMs located in any location besides a bank are far more susceptible to theft. There’s less of a chance of skimming (a form of stealing your personal data) at your bank’s local branch, because the bank has security methods in place including video cameras. ATMs at convenience stores are maintained by a third party.

- Change your PIN number regularly and use different PINs for different accounts.

- Never use your PIN online under any circumstances. Any request to do so is a scam.

- When shopping, use a credit card over debit. Your credit card likely has 100-percent fraud protection, whereas your debit card may not.

- Check your bank account status frequently and report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately.
