photo credit: destinelee There’s Pledge, Windex, SoftScrub, and a bunch of other bottles stashed under my kitchen sink. There’s stuff to clean stainless steel and stuff to clean the stove top. Some of it smells like lemons and some smells like pine needles. But the truth is, pretty much all of it is unnecessary. Not only do these products needlessly pollute and contaminate, these cleaning supplies also cost a lot of money. There are ways you can save on cleaning supplies.
Buy Refills.
Instead of buying a new squirt bottle of Windex every month or so, I buy one big refill bottle. It’s cheaper this way and it creates less plastic waste.
Buy Vinegar.
Vinegar is amazing. This one product can do the job that ten of your other cleaning products can do. That limits clutter under the sink and keeps some money in your wallet. For a great list of all the wonderful ways that vinegar can be used to clean your house check out this site. It can be a weed killer, shower scrubber, toilet cleaner or a carpet stain remover Boil some vinegar in your microwave to get rid of that crusty, baked on food that’s splattered all over.
Buy Baking Soda.
It’s non-toxic, extremely useful and super cheap It’s great at taking away odors or even clearing drains. Create a paste with it to scrub your shower down. Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and vacuum it up to freshen up your home.
Buy Lemon Juice.
Lemon juice is a natural acid so it makes a great cleaner. It will remove stains on clothing, clean pots and pans, and freshen your home. Since it’s natural, it won’t harm the environment and it’s completely safe.
