iPhone dropping Google for Bing (for mobile default search)

When did Bing.com search engine results get relevant? Remember Live.com or their search-and- win promotional search engine (that reminded me of 2003 hey-day)? Microsoft has publicly said they “dropped the ball onsearch,” and they were going to play catch up to Google. Now it looks as if Bing will enter the mobile search market by (maybe?) by becoming the default search engine for the iPhone.

Bing is already breaking-through and gaining a lot of traction, beating CNN.com, Digg.com and Twitter.com in pure monthly unique visitors (Source: Obsessable). This (if it goes through) is likely to increase their share. But I wonder. Since iPhone users are generally more sophisticated then the average internet user – will they just opt-out and download Google as default? (I know that’s what I’d do).

Now all this isn’t as interesting as the last paragraph in BusinessWeek:

Even if it’s consummated, an Apple-Bing deal may prove short-lived. The person familiar with Apple’s thinking says Apple has a “skunk works” looking at a search offering of its own, and believes that “if Apple does do a search deal with Microsoft, it’s about buying itself time.

Will Apple Soon enter the search engine market? Of course there is money to be made there, and Apple definitely has top talent – but is it likely?
